Setting up Standard Hosting in Vev

Easily publish your Vev content to your domain using our Standard Hosting (by Cloudflare) option.

If you're looking to publish your Vev content quickly and easily, connecting your domain with Standard Hosting is the way to go. We use Cloudflare's hosting services — a top cloud computing company — to ensure that your content is served securely and smoothly.

When to choose Standard Hosting:

  • If you want your Vev project to be the main content on a domain or sub-domain.

Consider other options when:

  • Embedding Vev content in your pages, like banners.

  • Making Vev pages accessible through a specific path on an existing website.

  • Dealing with complex hosting requirements or specific IT policies.

If any of the above are true, don't worry. Vev supports a variety of hosting options that allow you to extract your content and host it in any way you want.

Note: Vev is not a domain registrar, so you'll need to use a DNS provider of your choice to obtain and manage your domain name.


Creating Standard Hosting

  1. Navigate to your account settings and click on Hosting in the left sidebar.

  2. Click "Create hosting"

  3. Enter your domain, ensuring you include "www." or a subdomain.

    1. Naked domains is not supported, but in the next step you can set up wwwRedirects, redirecting your from the naked domain.

  4. Choose Standard Hosting as the hosting option.

  5. Decide on the access level (public or private).

  6. Click "Create hosting"

Due to our hosting provider, we do not have the option to connect to a naked domain (e.g. example.com without “www”). We are actively exploring ways to improve your experience.

⭐️ Tip: You can use a Punycode converter if you need to use special letters in your domain. You should enter the output when writing your domain name.

Automatic DNS Configuration

If you own the domain, or have the login credentials at hand follow these steps:

  1. Under "Connect domain," click "Automatic DNS configuration."

    1. If you’ve added a "www." in your domain; a check-mark allowing you to “Include redirect from yourdomain.com” will appear. Keep in mind that we only support redirect for certain DNS providers. See the full list of wwwRedirect feature support.

  2. We will start to analyze who the DNS provider is for your domain. After analyzing, we will prompt you to log in to your provider. From here you can move forward two ways:

If you have the login credentials

  1. Enter your login credentials, and click Continue

    1. Unless you already have records you want to override or if you have issues with wwwRedirect then this is your last step.

  2. Once logged in and authorized, click Done to close the modal.

  3. Changes typically take less than a few hours to go live, however it can take up to 48 hours. In most cases it takes less than a minute. Click “Check domain” after a minute to see if the hosting status has changed to “Connected”.

  4. Now you’re done and ready to publish!

If you do not have the login credentials

Because you’re creating on behalf of a client or colleague:

  1. Click Or forward login to someone else.

  2. Copy the link provided and send to a colleague to complete login on their end. They just need to enter the login credentials and they’re done.

    1. Tell them to let you know once they’re done so you can finalize the setup.

  3. Once you’ve been notified, close the modal to return to the hosting settings page.

  4. Click “Connect domain”, and see the button turn grey and change to “Check domain”. Changes typically take less than a few hours to go live, however it can take up to 48 hours. In most cases it takes less than a minute.

  5. Click “Check domain” after a minute to see if the hosting status has changed to “Connected”. Once connected, you’re ready to publish your project!

Manual DNS Setup

Once you've added your domain to your account, our system will automatically generate the DNS records, specifically the CNAME (Canonical name) record. These records act as invisible connectors between your domain name and our Standard Hosting server.

Add the CNAME record to your domain name registrar

CNAME is a type of DNS record that links your custom domain (e.g. anexample.com) to our Standard Hosting server. This eliminates the need for the default domain generated by our system (e.g., domain.vev.page). With this setup, you and your website visitors won't have to remember the default domain, making your website more user-friendly.

  1. In your domain name registrar account (GoDaddy, Google Domains, etc.), locate the domain's DNS settings or DNS manager. You may need to consult your registrar's documentation or contact their support team for assistance.

  2. Add the CNAME value (domain.vev.page) to your domain's DNS settings.

  3. Save the changes to your DNS settings and wait for the changes to propagate. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours or even up to 48 hours.

  4. Once the changes have propagated, return to your domain settings page in Vev and click "Connect domain". Confirm that your domain is connected and working successfully.
    Note: The "Connect domain" will turn into "Check domain" button

  5. Once successfully connected you will see the "Connected" label

SSL certificate

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that establishes a secure connection between a web browser and a web server. When you visit a website with an SSL certificate, you'll see "https://" in the URL, which means that the connection is encrypted and secure.

Having an SSL certificate on your website is important for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to establish trust with your website visitors, as they can see that their personal and sensitive information is being transmitted securely. Secondly, having an SSL certificate can positively impact your website's search engine rankings, as search engines prioritize websites that provide a secure browsing experience.

Having an SSL certificate also ensures privacy, critical security, and data integrity, which is essential for e-commerce websites and other sites that collect sensitive information such as login credentials, credit card details, or personal information. Without an SSL certificate, sensitive information could be intercepted by attackers, compromising the security and privacy of your website users.

To check if a website has an SSL certificate, simply look for "https://" in the address bar of your browser. If the website doesn't have an SSL certificate, it will display "http://" instead.

Note: After pointing your domain, it takes approximately 5 minutes for the SSL certificate to be up and running.

Re-issue SSL certificate

If you're experiencing any issues with your SSL certificate or made any changes to your domain, it's important to take action quickly to ensure that your website remains secure and accessible:

  • In the dashboard, lick your User icon in the upper right corner of the left-side panel.

  • Click "Hosting".

  • Find the domain you want to re-issue the SSL certificate to.

  • Navigate to the "Connect domain" tile.

  • Click "Check domain".


Deleting your domain

When you delete your domain from Vev, it means that you are removing your published projects from Vev and that your published projects will no longer be accessible using your domain name.

  • First and foremost, you bought your domain and it is still yours! We have no right to delete that from you!

  • Your domain will be deleted in Vev as well as in Cloudflare: This means that you will not be able to recover your published projects and they also will no longer be accessible.

  • Your Vev projects will be still available!

  • All the hosting settings (as well as the Integrations settings, if applicable) will be permanently deleted.

  • If you are not the owner or an admin of the Vev account, you will not have permission to delete the domain. In this case, you should reach out to the owner or an admin of the account and request that they delete the domain for you.

Additional settings for your domain

Adding a web path

You can add a path to your domain at the core level, which means it will be used as a base path in all projects that the domain is added to.

Adding a favicon

A favicon is a visual representation of your web page that helps your user visually identify and distinguish websites when they have multiple tabs open. Simply drag and drop your file into the designated area.

⭐️ Tip: We recommend using PNG files.

Select your default content language

Here you can set the default content language for all your published projects. This determines the language and character encoding used for the text content in your websites, ensuring proper display and functionality.


Troubleshooting

  • Check for conflicting DNS records: Check for any conflicting DNS records that could be preventing the CNAME record from resolving correctly. For example, there may be an existing A record that conflicts with the CNAME record.

  • Verify the CNAME entry: Check that the CNAME record (domain.vev.page) is correctly entered in the DNS zone file or control panel. Ensure that the CNAME entry points to the correct domain name or IP address.

  • Check DNS propagation: After making any changes to your DNS settings, it can take up to 24-48 hours for the changes to propagate throughout the internet. some users may see the new website while others may still see the old one. You can check the status of DNS propagation by using a tool like https://www.whatsmydns.net/

  • Verify the TTL: The Time-To-Live (TTL) value for your DNS record specifies how long the record should be cached by DNS servers. If the TTL is too high, it could cause delays in DNS propagation. Check that the TTL value is set to an appropriate value.

  • Clear cache and cookies: Clear the cache and cookies of the browser you are using to access the website. This can help resolve issues related to outdated DNS information.

  • Contact your DNS provider: If you are still experiencing issues after trying the steps above, contact your hosting provider for assistance. They may be able to identify any issues on their end or offer further guidance.

  • Can't publish due to "Publishing is unavailable as your domain is not connected successfully yet. Connect your domain here.": To proceed with publishing, ensure that your domain is successfully connected. Please connect your domain to enable publishing to that destination.
