Requirements and browser support

Written by Jørgen Wigum Lurvik

Supported Web Browsers

To build or edit projects in Vev, use a Chromium-based desktop browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, or Arc. To view a published Vev project, use almost any modern browser, including Safari and Firefox. Vev officially supports the five most recent stable releases of every major browser, so keeping your browser up to date is the single best way to avoid problems. hugi

Editing in Vev

Vev is built on the Chromium engine, so the editor only runs in Chromium-based desktop browsers. To build or edit a project, use one of these:

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Brave

  • Arc

Not supported for editing: Non-Chromium browsers such as Safari and Firefox. They may fail to fully load the editor or cause performance issues. If the editor will not open, switch to one of the supported browsers above.

Viewing Published Projects

Once your project is published, visitors can view it in nearly any modern browser, not just Chromium-based ones. Supported browsers include:

  • Safari

  • Mozilla Firefox

  • DuckDuckGo

  • Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Arc, and others)

Minimum Browser Versions

Published Vev projects support the following minimum versions and all newer versions:

Safari-Specific Issues

Crashes and Performance Issues in Safari

Some users experience browser crashes or performance issues when viewing web pages, including Vev projects, in Safari. This is most common on iPhone but can also affect iPad and desktop. To reduce the risk of crashes or rendering errors:

  1. Update iOS and Safari to the latest version.

  2. Restart your device to clear cached data.

  3. If problems continue, open the project in Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser.

Autoheight Rendering in Safari

When you design in Vev using Autoheight values, Safari may not calculate the height correctly, which can cause layout issues. To fix this:

  1. Replace Autoheight with fixed pixel (px) values wherever possible.

  2. Preview the project in Safari before publishing to confirm that elements render as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit my Vev project in Safari or Firefox?

No. The Vev editor requires a Chromium-based browser: Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Arc. Safari and Firefox are not supported for editing and may not load the editor. Your visitors can still view the published site in Safari and Firefox.

Why will the Vev editor not load?

The most common causes are using a non-Chromium browser (such as Safari or Firefox) or running an out-of-date browser. Switch to a supported Chromium browser, then update it to the latest version.

Which browsers can visitors use to view my published site?

Nearly any modern browser at or above the minimum version listed above, including Safari, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, and Arc.

My published site crashes in Safari on iPhone. How do I fix it?

  1. Update iOS and Safari to the latest version.

  2. Restart your device.

  3. If the crash continues, open the site in Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser.

My layout looks broken in Safari but fine in other browsers?

This is usually caused by Safari miscalculating Autoheight values. Replace Autoheight with fixed pixel (px) values, then preview the page in Safari before publishing.

Using a supported browser but still have issues. What should I do?

Work through these steps in order:

  1. Update your browser. In Chrome, type chrome://settings/help in the address bar and press Enter. Chrome checks for updates and installs any that are available.

  2. Clear your browser cache. Press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac), select "Cached images and files," then confirm. Cached files can load old or incomplete versions of your site.

  3. Restart your browser and device. This clears temporary system processes that can interfere with performance.
